The main difference between these two is the fat content that the cake possesses. Butter cake generally will have more fat since in the preparation of cake more butter and oil will be used and usually will not be airier. But Foam cakes contain less fat where mostly the whipped eggs will be used to prepare the cakes hence the cake also looks airier and spongy. The cream will be made using butter and sugar by mixing using the electrical mixer. If we want to add any dry items with this then will add them along with the cream.
